Support at Home Occupational Therapy

Practical OT support to help you stay safe and independent at home

At Forbes Care Occupational Therapy, our Occupational Therapists support older adults (65+) to live safely and confidently at home through Australia’s Support at Home (SaH) program.

We focus on practical, everyday solutions — assessing your needs, recommending suitable equipment, and helping put supports in place so daily life feels safer and easier.

How a Support at Home Occupational Therapist Helps

Our OTs provide clinical assessment and recommendations, including:

  • Assessing safety, mobility, fatigue, and daily activities
  • Recommending the right equipment for your needs
  • Arranging trials and setup where required
  • Providing clinical justification for SaH funding
  • Educating you and your family on safe use

This is a clinical service, accessed through your Support at Home package.

Common Support at Home OT Recommendations

Electric Recliner Chairs

Struggling to stand up from a chair safely?
An OT assesses your strength, balance, pain, and fatigue to recommend the right electric recliner chair so standing and sitting are safer and less effortful.

Electric Beds

If getting in and out of bed is difficult or unsafe, an OT can assess transfer safety, bed height, and night-time risks to determine if an electric bed is clinically required.

Walking Aids (Wheeled Walkers & Frames)

Using a walker but still feeling unsteady?
OTs ensure walking aids are the right type, height, and setup and provide education to reduce falls risk.

Wheelchairs

For fatigue, reduced mobility, or safety concerns, OTs assess posture, pressure care, and daily use to recommend appropriate wheelchairs when needed.

Minor Home Modifications

Bathroom & Toilet Safety

Small changes can make a big difference:

  • Shower rails
  • Toilet rails
  • Entry rails

An OT ensures rails are clinically justified and placed safely, reducing falls and improving confidence.

Personal Alarm Systems

For peace of mind at home, OTs assess whether a personal alarm system suits your routines, risks, and living situation.

Kitchen Aids

Fatigue or reduced grip can make cooking hard.
OTs recommend practical kitchen aids such as perching stools, kettle tippers, and jar openers to support safe independence.
