Deaf & Hard of Hearing Occupational Therapy

Hearing loss can impact many areas of life — from communication and safety to confidence and social connection. Forbes Care’s Deaf and Hard of Hearing Occupational Therapy Program supports older adults to remain independent, safe, and engaged in their home and community.

How we support

Our Occupational Therapists understand that hearing loss is not just about sound — it affects energy levels, attention, balance, safety awareness, and social participation.

Support may include:

  • Home safety assessments with a focus on alerts, alarms, and visitor notification
  • Prescription and training in visual, vibrating, or amplified alert systems
  • Communication supports such as captioning apps, speech-to-text tools, and smart technology
  • Strategies to reduce fatigue and sensory overload
  • Assistance with daily tasks such as cooking, self-care, and household routines
  • Community access planning and technology support

Individualised and respectful

We work closely with each person to understand:

  • Their preferred communication method
  • Whether hearing loss has been lifelong or acquired
  • How hearing devices are used (or not used) in daily life
  • What environments feel most challenging

Programs are typically delivered over 4–6 weeks, with hands-on trials of equipment, education, and practical strategies embedded into daily routines.

Our aim

To reduce barriers, improve confidence, and support meaningful participation — so people feel connected, safe, and supported, not limited by hearing loss.
