Vision Impairment Occupational Therapy

Vision changes can have a significant impact on daily life — affecting safety, mobility, confidence, and social participation. Forbes Care’s Vision Impairment Occupational Therapy Program supports older adults with low vision or blindness to continue living safely and independently at home and in the community.

What we focus on

Our Occupational Therapists take a whole-person approach, recognising that vision loss often affects more than just eyesight. We look at how vision changes interact with mobility, fatigue, confidence, mental health, and everyday routines.

Support may include:

  • Home safety assessments to reduce falls and hazards
  • Lighting optimisation and contrast enhancements
  • Prescription and training in low-vision aids (e.g. magnifiers, talking devices, tactile markers)
  • Strategies for daily activities such as cooking, dressing, showering, and managing medications
  • Technology solutions to support communication, orientation, and independence
  • Planning for community access, transport, and future needs

Tailored and practical

The program is delivered over 4–6 weeks, starting with a detailed functional assessment. We then trial and implement aids directly in the home, ensuring everything is practical, personalised, and easy to use.

We also support:

  • Energy conservation and fatigue management
  • Organisation and routine set-up
  • Confidence in using smartphones and accessibility features
  • Referrals to vision-specific services where helpful

Why Occupational Therapy?

Occupational Therapy goes beyond equipment. It’s about problem-solving real-life challenges and helping people stay engaged in the activities that give life meaning.
