What to Expect in Your First OT Session: Laying the Foundations for Independence

At Forbes Care, your first Occupational Therapy session is more than just a quick introduction — it’s the beginning of a partnership built on understanding, trust, and practical support.

We take the time to really get to know you — not just your medical history, but your lifestyle, goals, and what matters most in your day-to-day life. Whether you're seeking support through the NDIS, a Home Care Package, DVA, or private funding, that first session sets the tone for a therapy plan that’s truly tailored to you.

It’s a 60–110 Minute Deep Dive Into You

Our initial OT sessions are typically 60 to 110 minutes long and designed to explore all the areas that affect your ability to live safely and independently at home. We come to you — in your home or preferred space — so we can see your environment and better understand your needs.

During this session, your therapist will:

  • Ask about your medical history, conditions, or injuries that may impact your daily function
  • Look at your home environment and how you navigate it
  • Explore your daily routines, including any tasks that feel difficult or tiring
  • Discuss any equipment or supports you currently use (or may benefit from)
  • Learn about your social supports — who’s around to help, and how
  • Identify your goals and priorities — what you’d like to change, improve, or maintain

Why This Matters

This first session isn’t just about gathering information — it’s about building understanding and trust. By getting a full picture of your needs and goals, your Occupational Therapist can start to develop a support plan that’s:

  • Clinically sound
  • Person-centred
  • Realistic and achievable
  • Aligned with your funding goals and eligibility

You’ll also get a clear explanation of the OT role and how we can support you across areas like:

  • Self-care and personal routines
  • Home safety and modifications
  • Equipment prescription (from simple aids to complex assistive technology)
  • Community access and transport
  • Fatigue management and energy conservation
  • Sleep, mobility, falls prevention, and more

Empowering You From the Start

We know that engaging with new services can sometimes feel overwhelming. That’s why our therapists approach every first session with care, curiosity, and clarity — ensuring you feel heard, supported, and informed from the beginning.

Whether you're working toward staying safely at home, returning to a favourite activity, or managing tasks more independently, your initial OT session is the first step toward a plan that fits your life — not the other way around.
