When the World Feels Too Loud: Sensory Tools for Kids with Sound Sensitivity

Does your little one cover their ears, get upset or want to leave when things get loud? Everyday sounds like hand dryers, sirens, the blender or a busy classroom can feel really big for some kids. If this sounds familiar, your child may be sensitive to sound.

The good news is there are simple tools that can help. Alongside support from an Occupational Therapist, the right tool can help your child feel calmer, more comfortable and more confident joining in.

What Is Sound Sensitivity?

Some children process sound differently, so noises that seem ordinary to others can feel overwhelming, painful or distracting. Sound sensitivity is often seen in children with sensory processing differences, autism, ADHD or anxiety, but it isn't limited to these groups.

You might notice your child:

  • covering their ears or hiding when things get loud
  • becoming upset, overwhelmed or wanting to leave noisy places
  • being startled easily by sudden sounds
  • finding it hard to focus or settle in busy environments
  • having trouble falling asleep when there's noise around the house
Kids Earmuffs

Earmuffs are a simple, reliable tool for those extra-loud moments. They're great for fireworks, concerts, live sport, motor racing, flights, school assemblies and birthday parties, so your family can go and enjoy these events together instead of missing out.

Earmuffs can also help children stay calm in busy places and feel more settled in new or unfamiliar spaces like airports, shopping centres, hospitals or a new school.

OTs usually recommend saving earmuffs for specific high-noise situations rather than wearing them all day. Wearing them constantly can make some children more sensitive to everyday sounds over time.

Loop Earplugs

Loop earplugs turn down the volume of the world around them without blocking it out completely, so your child can still hear friends, family and teachers. They're small, comfortable and discreet, which makes them great for older kids and teens who'd rather not wear bulky earmuffs.

Loop can be really helpful in busy classrooms, at the shops, at family get-togethers or at sport. They help sound feel more manageable so your child can stay calm, focused and connected.

Sound Machines

A sound machine plays gentle, steady sounds like white noise, rain or ocean waves. These calming background sounds soften sudden noises, like a dog barking, cars outside or a sibling moving around, so your child is less likely to be startled.

Sound machines can be a lovely part of a bedtime routine, and they're also handy for quiet time, homework or helping little ones relax in a new space. It's a simple, soothing way to make your child's world feel a little more calm and predictable.

How an Occupational Therapist Can Help

Every child is different, so the right tool depends on your child, their sensory needs and the situations they find hardest. An Occupational Therapist can help you:

  • Understand your child's sensory needs and what's behind their reactions to sound
  • Choose the right tool for the right moment, whether that's earmuffs, earplugs, a sound machine or something else
  • Pair tools with other strategies, like preparing your child for what's coming and gently building their comfort with everyday sounds over time
  • Build independence, so your child learns to recognise when they need support and reach for their tools on their own

The goal isn't to block out the world. It's to help your child feel safe and regulated so they can take part in the things that matter to them.
