Changes in vision can impact much more than eyesight alone.
For many older Australians, vision loss or visual impairment can gradually affect confidence, safety, mobility, participation in daily activities and overall independence. Tasks that were once automatic — reading medication labels, preparing meals, navigating the community, identifying hazards around the home or participating in hobbies — can begin to feel difficult, frustrating or unsafe.
At Forbes Care, our Vision Loss and Vision Impairment Program has been designed to support individuals to continue living safely, independently and meaningfully within their homes and communities.
Our Occupational Therapists work alongside individuals to understand how changes in vision are impacting everyday life and develop practical strategies and environmental supports that improve safety, accessibility and participation.
This is not a one-size-fits-all program.
Every person’s experience with vision loss is different. Our role is to understand the person, their home environment, routines, goals and what matters most to them, then tailor recommendations and supports to suit their individual needs.
The program is designed within a reablement framework, meaning we focus on supporting independence, confidence and sustainable strategies rather than creating unnecessary dependence on services.
Our Occupational Therapists can assist with:
Vision changes can significantly impact safety and hazard awareness within the home.
Our Occupational Therapists can assess and support areas such as:
We work collaboratively with individuals and families to create practical environmental modifications and strategies that improve safety while maintaining independence.
Vision impairment can make once familiar tasks more difficult or fatiguing.
Occupational Therapy can support:
There are many tools available that can support participation and independence for individuals living with vision impairment.
Depending on the individual’s goals and needs, this may include:
Our team helps individuals and families navigate what options may best suit their routines, preferences and environment.
Changes in vision can sometimes lead individuals to withdraw socially or lose confidence accessing the community independently.
Our Occupational Therapists support individuals to continue engaging in activities, appointments, relationships and community environments that are important to them.
To help explain what Occupational Therapy support can look like in everyday life, we’ve also shared a short video scenario example exploring how vision changes may impact someone within their home and community routines, along with the types of supports and strategies that may assist.
While this video can help provide a practical understanding of the program, it is important to remember that every individual’s experience with vision impairment is different. The scenario shared does not represent every person’s needs, preferences or goals, and Occupational Therapy recommendations are always tailored to the individual, their environment and what matters most to them.
